What is a capping rail and what does it do?
A capping rail is a length of timber fixed along the top of a closeboard fence, running horizontally over the featheredge boards and arris rails. Its primary function is to shed water away from the top of the fence - without it, rain sits on the end grain of the featheredge boards and the top rail, accelerating rot. It also ties the tops of the boards together, stiffening the fence and giving a neater finished appearance. A capping rail is a standard component of every closeboard fence build.
What is the difference between a shaped capping rail and a plain rail?
The shaped capping rail has a profiled top - typically a slight ridge or chamfer - which sheds water more effectively than a flat surface and gives a more traditional, finished look. The plain rail (25 mm x 50 mm) is a flat, sawn section that does the same structural job at a lower cost - it is the functional choice where appearance is less of a priority. Both are available in green and brown treated to match the rest of the fence. The shaped rail is the more common choice for residential fencing where the top of the fence is visible.
How much capping rail do I need?
Capping runs the full length of the fence, one rail per bay. Each rail is 3 m long, matching the standard post spacing for closeboard fencing. For a fence of, say, 12 m you need four lengths.
