Why choose a 5ft panel instead of a 6ft panel?

The most common reason is to combine a 5ft panel with a 6-inch or 12-inch gravel board at the base to achieve a finished fence height of around 6ft, while keeping the timber panel itself off the ground. This significantly extends the panel's life, as the gravel board - rather than the panel - takes the contact with soil and moisture. Alternatively, a 5ft panel paired with a trellis topper gives a 6ft-plus finish with a more decorative appearance than a solid panel alone.

Are 5ft panels suitable for a boundary fence on a public road?

A solid fence adjacent to a highway - including a pavement or public footpath - is generally limited to 1 m (approximately 3ft 3in) in height under permitted development rules in England. A 5ft fence along a road boundary would therefore typically require planning permission. This rule applies to the boundary with the highway itself; for boundaries between gardens or at the rear of a property, the 2 m limit applies without permission. If in doubt, check with your local planning authority before installation.

Do the same posts fit both 5ft and 6ft panels?

Yes, provided the posts are tall enough. All panels in this range are 6ft (1.83 m) or 1.8 m wide, so post spacing is the same regardless of panel height. What changes is the post length required - a taller post is needed to accommodate a 6ft panel plus gravel board than for a 5ft panel alone. As a guide, add the panel height and any gravel board height to the minimum in-ground depth (600 mm for most garden fences) to get the post length needed.
