What fixings do I need to attach arris rails to fence posts?
That depends on the post type. For square timber posts, the 12" arris rail repair bracket is the standard option - it wraps around the arris rail and screws to the face of the post, and is also used to repair a broken rail mid-span without replacing the whole length. The bolt-on arris rail bracket gives a neater, more concealed fixing where appearance matters. For concrete morticed posts, the arris rail bracket for morticed concrete posts adapts the rail to suit the pocket in the post. V-notched and morticed timber posts accept the shaped end of the arris rail directly without a bracket.
What nails should I use to fix featheredge boards?
Galvanised nails are essential - bright steel nails will rust and stain the timber within a season. The standard choice is 50 mm galvanised jagged nails - the jagged profile grips the wood more effectively than a smooth shank and significantly reduces the chance of boards working loose over time. For high-volume installation, the gas gun nails (3300 per box, 50 mm x 2.8 mm) are collated for use with a gas nailer and considerably speed up the work. Bright round wire nails in this range are not suitable for exterior featheredge fixing - they are for internal or temporary use only.
What is a gravel board cleat and do I need one?
A gravel board cleat is a small bracket that holds the gravel board in position at the base of the fence, keeping it tight against the posts and preventing it from shifting or lifting. The 2-prong gravel board cleat is the metal version - it bolts through the post and grips the gravel board between the prongs. The wooden cleat is a simpler timber block screwed to the post face to support the board from below. Both come as standard components in a closeboard fence build.
Do I need different fixings for a closeboard panel fence versus a built-in-place closeboard fence?
Yes - the two systems use different components. A built-in-place closeboard fence uses arris rails fixed to posts, with individual featheredge boards nailed across them, and requires arris rail brackets, gravel board cleats, and featheredge nails. A closeboard panel is a pre-assembled unit that fits between posts in the same way as an overlap panel - it does not use arris rail brackets at all, and is fixed either by screwing through the panel frame into the post or with panel clips.
