Which type of fence post should I choose - timber, concrete, or steel?
Each suits different situations. Timber posts are the most versatile and work with all panel and closeboard systems; they can be cut to length on site and are the standard choice for most residential fencing. Concrete posts are more durable in ground contact and are particularly popular with panel fencing where slotted posts allow panels to slide in without additional fixings - they also resist rot at ground level where timber is most vulnerable. DuraPost steel posts are the most durable option overall, with a much smaller footprint than timber or concrete; they suit modern slatted panels and are available in several colours. For a traditional look with maximum longevity, concrete is a practical choice; for contemporary fencing, DuraPost is worth considering.
What is a repair spur and when do I need one?
A repair spur is a short concrete post used to salvage a timber fence post that has rotted at the base while the upper section remains sound. The spur is concreted into the ground alongside the damaged post, and the two are bolted together - restoring the structural integrity of the fence without digging out and replacing the full post. It is a significantly quicker and cheaper repair than a full post replacement, and it works well where the fence above ground level is otherwise in good condition.
Can I use a bolt-down post base instead of setting a post in concrete?
Yes, in some situations. A bolt-down base such as the Bolt Down Base 89x89mm is fixed to an existing hard surface - concrete, paving, or a deck - using anchor bolts, and the post slots into the socket above ground. This avoids breaking up an existing surface and makes the post replaceable without digging. The trade-off is that a surface-fixed base is less resistant to lateral loading than a post concreted into the ground, so it is better suited to lighter fencing, trellis, or decorative applications rather than full-height privacy fencing in exposed locations.
