As you have seen in our collection, each Field Gate at Timberstore is a blend of craftsmanship and quality. We understand that a gate is more than a barrier; it's a vital part of your property's first impression. That's why we offer a variety of designs and materials to complement your fencing and landscape.

Our wooden gates bring a traditional charm, ideal for rustic or country-style properties. They are treated to withstand the elements, ensuring a lasting beauty and minimal maintenance. For those who prefer a more modern and sturdy option, our metal gates stand as a testament to strength and style.

What is the difference between a field gate and a hunting gate?

A field gate is a wide, heavy-duty gate designed primarily for vehicle and livestock access - typically 3 m to 4.8 m wide. A hunting gate is a narrower pedestrian gate, usually around 1 m wide, designed to be used alongside or within a field gate setup to allow access on foot or horseback without opening the main vehicle gate. Our Field / Hunting Gate is available in multiple widths to cover both uses.

Do I need specific posts for field gates?

Yes - field gates are heavier than garden gates and the hanging post in particular takes considerable load, especially with a wide timber or metal gate swinging on it. The range includes dedicated metal hang posts and slam posts at 2 m, designed to be concreted into the ground and sized for the load. Timber posts are not recommended for wider field gate openings where the leverage on the hanging post is significant. Set hang posts in concrete with a minimum of 750 mm in the ground - more in soft or waterlogged ground.

Are the field gates suitable for livestock containment?

The timber Field / Hunting Gate and the Ashcombe Metal Gates are both built for agricultural use and suitable for general livestock containment when correctly hung and latched. For sheep or small animals, check that the bar spacing on the metal gate is appropriate - cattle gates typically have wider bar spacing than sheep gates. Latching is equally important: a long handle auto latch or field gate auto latch kit is recommended over a basic ring latch for gates that need to be operated one-handed while moving animals.
