What is the difference between trellis and lattice?
In our range, both terms refer to open-grid timber panels - the difference is in the slat thickness, spacing, and pattern rather than function. Trellis panels typically use thinner, lighter strips in a square or diamond pattern. Lattice, particularly our Heavy Diamond Lattice, uses heavier timber for a more substantial look and feel. Both are used for the same purposes: garden screening, plant support, and decorative top sections above solid fencing.
What can I use trellis panels for?
Common uses include adding height to the top of a solid fence, creating a garden screen or divider, supporting climbing plants such as roses, clematis, or ivy, and framing garden structures. Some panels in the range - such as the Western Red Cedar slatted panel and the Tropic Panel - work well as standalone decorative screening.
Will trellis panels support climbing plants?
Yes. The open grid design allows stems and tendrils to weave through the gaps, and you can tie in plants as they grow. For heavier climbers, the Heavy Diamond Lattice is a more robust option. Dense plant growth increases wind loading, so make sure posts and fixings are appropriate for the height and situation.
Are the trellis panels pressure treated?
Most softwood panels in this range are treated for outdoor use, and the majority are pressure treated. The green colour of the standard panels is a natural result of the copper-based preservative used; the brown trellis uses the same treatment with a brown pigment added. Western Red Cedar is naturally durable and does not require the same preservative treatment. Treatment method can vary between products - check the individual product page to confirm whether a panel is pressure treated or surface treated.
What is the difference between standard trellis and privacy lattice?
Standard trellis and lattice panels have a relatively open grid, letting light and air through freely. Privacy Lattice panels use closer-spaced slats to reduce visibility - useful when you want some screening effect alongside the decorative look of a lattice panel. If full privacy is the priority, a closeboard or solid panel is a better choice; privacy lattice sits somewhere between open trellis and a solid panel.
Can I use trellis on top of an existing fence to add height?
Yes, this is one of the most common uses. Trellis panels are often fixed to the top of a solid fence panel or closeboard fence to add height, improve screening, or give the fence a more decorative finish. Check that your fence posts extend high enough to support the additional panel, and that the total height is within permitted development limits - in most cases the maximum is 2 m at the boundary without planning permission (or 1 m adjacent to a highway).
What posts do I need for trellis panels?
That depends on whether the trellis is being used as a standalone fence or as a topper on an existing fence. For standalone trellis panels up to 6ft wide, timber fence posts at matching centres work well - either slotted (for panel-style fixing) or plain square posts with panel clips or screws through the frame. If you are adding trellis on top of an existing fence, the existing posts need to be tall enough to carry the extra height. Our timber fence posts and concrete fence posts are available in a range of lengths.
What fixings should I use to attach trellis panels?
Galvanised fixings are recommended for outdoor use - plain steel will corrode and stain the timber. Panel clips or screws driven through the frame into the post are the most common method. Where trellis is being fixed to an existing fence rail or post, galvanised screws with a washer under the head give a secure hold. Avoid bright steel nails or screws outdoors. Our nails and fixings section has suitable options.
How do I maintain timber trellis panels?
Pressure-treated trellis panels are low maintenance but benefit from a coat of fence paint or wood preservative every couple of years. Cut ends expose untreated timber and should be sealed with an end grain preservative. Cedar panels weather to a natural silver-grey over time; a suitable oil or stain will maintain the original colour if preferred. Our fence paint and preservatives range has suitable products.
Do trellis panels come in different colours?
Most standard trellis panels are available in green treated and brown treated. Both can be painted or stained once installed if you want to change the colour over time.
What sizes are available?
Sizes vary across the range. Most trellis panels are 6ft (1.83 m) wide - the standard fence bay width - with heights ranging from around 1ft to 6ft depending on the product. The Trellis Panel Green 3M is available in 3 m width for longer runs. Some panels are fixed in size rather than available in multiple options - check the individual product pages for exact dimensions.
