What is the difference between stock fencing, wire netting, and weldmesh?
Stock fencing uses horizontal line wires with vertical stays in graduated spacings - closer at the bottom for small animals, wider at the top - and is the standard agricultural boundary fence for sheep, cattle, and horses over long runs. Wire netting has a hexagonal mesh and suits poultry, rabbits, and small animal containment where a finer aperture is needed; the 25 mm mesh is for smaller animals, the 50 mm for general use. Weldmesh has a rigid welded square grid - it holds its shape without tensioning, which makes it better suited to dog runs, secure enclosures, and situations where the mesh needs to stand independently rather than be strained between posts.
What wire do I need to attach mesh to posts and straining posts?
Galvanised staples are used to fix mesh directly to timber posts - the size depends on the post timber and mesh gauge. For line wires between straining posts, plain galvanised wire (3.15 mm for general use, 25 kg coil for longer runs) is tensioned and fixed with a ratchet strainer. Tie wire - either galvanised 1.6 mm or green PVC coated 2 mm - is used to attach mesh panels to line wires or to each other at joins. For chain-link specifically, netting clips rather than tie wire give a neater, more secure fixing.
Is deer fencing significantly different from standard stock fencing?
Yes - deer fencing needs to be considerably taller and more robust than standard stock fencing. The deer fencing in this range is designed specifically to exclude deer, with a wire spacing and height suited to the task. Standard stock fencing at 1.05 m or 1.2 m is inadequate for deer exclusion - red deer in particular can clear fences well above that height.
