What is a Post Saver sleeve and does it actually work?

A Post Saver sleeve is a bitumen-lined polypropylene wrap applied to the section of a timber post that sits in the ground - typically the bottom 300-600 mm plus the zone just above ground level, where rot starts fastest due to moisture cycling. The sleeve is shrunk onto the post with a heat gun, sealing the wood against water ingress at the most vulnerable point. It is a recognised and effective way to extend post life, particularly where posts are going into heavy clay or poorly drained ground. Several sleeve sizes are available to suit different post sections, including specific versions for round posts.

Why do I need to treat cut ends on timber posts, and what should I use?

Pressure treatment penetrates the outer layers of the timber but does not fully reach the core. When a post is cut to length - either to adjust height or to create a pointed end - the untreated inner wood is exposed. This is the most vulnerable point for moisture entry and subsequent rot. Impra End Coat Green is a brush-applied preservative specifically designed for cut end grain; it should be applied to any freshly cut surface before the post goes in the ground or is exposed to weather. This applies to both new installations and any on-site trimming during a repair.

Can I use a metal post extender instead of replacing a fence post?

Yes, in the right circumstances. A Metal Post Extender sleeves over the existing post and drives into the ground alongside it, effectively splinting the base and adding height if the post has become too short after being re-cut above a rotten section. It is a faster and cheaper alternative to a full post replacement when the above-ground timber is still sound. For posts that have rotted at the base but are otherwise intact, a repair spur concreted in alongside is the heavier-duty equivalent for closeboard and panel fencing under higher load.
