What types of gates does Timberstore stock?
The range covers four main areas: garden gates for residential boundaries and rear access, field gates for agricultural and rural use, bespoke gates for non-standard openings or specific design requirements, and gate posts and ironmongery to complete the installation. All timber gates are pressure treated for outdoor use.
What ironmongery do I need to hang a garden gate?
A standard single gate requires a pair of hinges, a latch, and - if the gate needs to be lockable - a bolt or lock. For timber gates on timber or concrete posts, adjustable band-and-hook hinges are a common choice as they allow the gate to be levelled after installation. A ring latch handles day-to-day operation; a barrel bolt or digital lock adds security. For double gates, a ground bolt or throw-over loop holds the inactive leaf in place. All of these are available in our gates ironmongery section in galvanised and black finishes.
What size gate posts do I need?
Gate posts carry more load than intermediate fence posts - particularly with a heavy gate or a wide double opening - so a larger section is recommended. A 100 mm x 100 mm post is suitable for most garden gates; for field gates or wider openings, a 150 mm x 150 mm or 200 mm x 200 mm post gives the additional strength needed. Posts should be set deeper than standard fence posts: a minimum of 750 mm in the ground for a garden gate, and deeper still for field gates or exposed locations.
