What is the difference between galvanised and black ironmongery?
Both finishes are suitable for outdoor use, but galvanised is the more durable option in exposed conditions - the zinc coating gives strong resistance to rust and is the standard choice for agricultural and high-wear applications such as field gates. Black ironmongery uses a paint or powder coat finish; it gives a cleaner, more decorative appearance and is popular on garden gates and timber fencing where aesthetics matter. For coastal or very exposed locations, galvanised is the safer choice regardless of how the gate looks.
What hinges do I need for a timber gate?
That depends on the gate weight and post type. Adjustable band-and-hook hinges (available in 24" and 30" galvanised versions) are the standard choice for most timber garden and field gates - the adjustable design allows the gate to be re-levelled after installation without removing the hinges. What do I need to secure a double gate?
A double gate needs one leaf to be held fixed while the other operates as the active leaf. A throw-over gate loop fixes the inactive leaf to the active one when both are open; a ground bolt or drop bolt pins the inactive leaf to the ground when closed. The active leaf is then secured with a latch or lock in the usual way.
